Laylat al-Qadr 2027 (The Night of Decree)

Laylat al-Qadr (لیلة القدر), often translated as the Night of Decree, Night of Power, or Night of Value, is considered the holiest eve of the Islamic year. According to Islamic tradition, it marks the night the Quran was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) by the angel Jibril (Gabriel).

The Quran explicitly states in Surah Al-Qadr (97:3) that "The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months." This means that any act of worship, prayer, or charity performed on this single night is rewarded as if it had been performed for over 83 continuous years.

When is Laylat al-Qadr in 2027?

The exact date of Laylat al-Qadr is intentionally hidden from humanity so that Muslims strive in worship throughout the final days of Ramadan. However, the Prophet Muhammad advised believers to "Seek it in the last ten days, on the odd nights" (Sahih al-Bukhari).

Based on the estimated start date of Ramadan 2027 (February 8), the last ten nights will begin at sunset on Sunday, February 28, 2027.

The crucial odd nights to seek Laylat al-Qadr (based on the astronomical calendar) will fall on the following Gregorian dates (starting at sunset):

  • 21st Night: Sunday, February 28, 2027
  • 23rd Night: Tuesday, March 2, 2027
  • 25th Night: Thursday, March 4, 2027
  • 27th Night: Saturday, March 6, 2027 (Traditionally the most observed night)
  • 29th Night: Monday, March 8, 2027
Important: In the Islamic calendar, the night precedes the day. Therefore, the "27th Night" actually begins at Maghrib (sunset) on the 26th day of Ramadan. Furthermore, because different countries may start Ramadan on different days, an "odd night" in your country might be an "even night" in a neighboring country. Therefore, it is highly recommended to worship intensely on all of the last ten nights.

Signs of Laylat al-Qadr

While the exact night is hidden, Islamic tradition mentions several physical signs to recognize the morning after Laylat al-Qadr:

  • The sun rises without visible rays, appearing like a pale disk.
  • The night is serene and peaceful, neither excessively hot nor cold.
  • A profound sense of tranquility is felt by worshippers.

The Best Dua for Laylat al-Qadr

Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) asked the Prophet Muhammad what she should say if she knew which night was Laylat al-Qadr. He taught her the following authentic supplication (Tirmidhi):

اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ عَفُوٌّ تُحِبُّ الْعَفْوَ فَاعْفُ عَنِّي

Transliteration: Allahumma innaka 'afuwwun tuhibbul-'afwa, fa'fu 'anni.

Translation: O Allah, You are Most Forgiving, and You love forgiveness; so forgive me.

How to Observe the Night

To maximize the blessings of the last ten nights, Muslims engage in:

  • Qiyam al-Layl (Night Prayers): Performing extra Taraweeh and Tahajjud prayers.
  • I'tikaf: Secluding oneself in the mosque for the final ten days for uninterrupted worship.
  • Reciting the Quran: Attempting to complete the recitation of the entire Quran.
  • Charity (Sadaqah): Giving charity, as the reward is multiplied immensely.
