What is Zakat?

Zakat is a mandatory charitable contribution, the right of the poor to find relief from the wealthy, and is considered a tax, or obligatory alms. Many Muslims choose to pay their annual Zakat during Ramadan.

Zakat al-Fitr is a special charity given before the Eid al-Fitr prayer. It is obligatory for every Muslim who possesses food in excess of their needs.
